Meh. Midwestern "hiking" with it's attendant boredom and mosquitoes. Not sure what all the hype is about here. Castle Rock itself was underwhelming.
This is a nice small state park with a lot of hiking trails. Parking and entrance is free. Some of the trails are shaded by trees and some are kinda steep. But the trip was well worth it.
A nice state park as north west Illinois State parks go. There are a number of nicely groomed short trails to walk or run on. There are some nice picnic areas as well. The view of the river from the Castle Rock scenic overlook was nice and is very pretty when the leaves are turning in the Fall. The park is clean and not very crowded. Family friendly and easy to get to from Chicago.
We had the park practically to ourselves! We hiked River Bluff trail in the north and the Oak Ridge and Fox Trails in the south. Had picnic lunch at the scenic overlook.
The park is nice, clean, free, and plenty of parking.
There's fishing, grills, picnic tables, nice trails, and bathrooms.
This review is mostly just on the scenic overlook area of Castle Rock. There were other park entrances but chose this one because i didn't do a lot of hiking and i packed everything but the bug spray!
